Modeling shallow landslides and root reinforcement: A review

چکیده

Slope Stability Models (SSMs) are valuable tools used as decision support in land management to mitigate catastrophic effects caused by rainfall-induced shallow landslides. In particular, SSMs incorporating the presence and influence of vegetation allow for evaluation how trees relative slope stability forest could ensure root reinforcement effect space time. By implementing empirical knowledge about complex mechanical hydrological processes, have been realized employing different modeling approaches methods, becoming suitable contexts scales analysis. Recent increasingly consider both a mechanism counteract triggering process landslides manageable modifiable tool mitigating hazards. This review aims analyze state-of-the-art applicable vegetated areas, investigating those that some most cited literature neglect this instead. After classification exposition on spatial temporal dimension analysis, approaches, complexity, we discuss identification Model (SSM) individual applications considering four fundamental aspects: analysis scale, purpose, output data. Although all risk quantifying factor safety, only few an accurate assessment changes structure, due occurrence natural human disturbances, also affect studied area. Such information is critical identifying criteria preserve enhance protection effect. The improvement data collection measurement techniques obtain parameters required development new able exploit improved detail information, thus allowing analyses.

Combining Spatial Models for Shallow Landslides and Debris-Flows Prediction

Mass movements in Brazil are common phenomena, especially during strong rainfall events that occur frequently in the summer season. These phenomena cause losses of lives and serious damage to roads, bridges, and properties. Moreover, the illegal occupation by slums on the slopes around the cities intensifies the effect of the mass movement. This study aimed to develop a methodology that combine...

Shallow landsliding, root reinforcement, and the spatial distribution of trees in the Oregon Coast Range

The influence of root reinforcement on shallow landsliding has been well established through mechanistic and empirical studies, yet few studies have examined how local vegetative patterns influence slope stability. Because root networks spread outward from trees, the species, size, and spacing of trees should influence the spatial distribution of root strength. We documented the distribution an...

Effect of Tree Roots on Shallow-Seated Landslides

Forest vegetation, especially tree roots, helps stabilize hillslopes by reinforcing soil shear strength. To evaluate the effect of tree roots on slope stability, information about the amount of roots and their strength should be known. A simulation model for the root distribution of Cryptomeria japonica was proposed where the number of roots in each 0.5.cm diameter class can be calculated at ar...

Enhanced application of root-reinforcement algorithms for bank-stability modeling

Riparian vegetation is known to exert a number of mechanical and hydrologic controls on bank stability. In particular, plant roots provide mechanical reinforcement to a soil matrix due to the different responses of soils and roots to stress. Root reinforcement is largely a function of the strength of the roots crossing potential shear planes, and the number and diameter of such roots. However, ...

Characterisation of weathered clayey soils responsible for shallow landslides

Shallow earth translational slides and earth flows, affecting colluvial soils derived by the weathering of the clayey bedrock, are a recurrent problem causing damage to buildings and roads in many areas of Apennines. The susceptibility assessment, e.g. slope stability models, requires the preliminary characterization of these superficial covers (lithology, geotechnical and hydraulic parameters)...
